Navigating Politics and the Election Season While Online Dating in 2022

Election Season is upon us and that means that politics are going to go be one of the central issues that people consider when finding and dating new partners that they’ve met on dating apps. But, in these slightly combustible times, it’s important to remember that you don’t have to be in political lockstep with someone to have a good match.

Finding a Good Online Dating Match During Election Season

I’m not saying that you need to start dating people who have completely different political beliefs and ideas than you have. I’m saying that most people have a lot more common ground when it comes to the booth than you’ve been led to believe by the anger and noise that surrounds us all every day in the news and on social media.

I want to start off by showing you a great couple who proves that you don’t have to be in total political agreement to make it work, and then I’ll give you some tips on how to navigate politics in your dating profile.

Carville and matalin

James Carville and Mary Matalin

The best example I can give you is the story of James Carville and Mary Matalin. Carville and Matalin are a married couple that couldn’t come from further away when it comes to politics. Carville has been working as a political strategist and commentator for decades, but he first came to notoriety as the head of Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. Meanwhile, when he and Matalin met, she was deputy director for President George H.W. Bush’s reelection campaign. Along the way, she’s also worked for Ronald Reagan, George W. Bush, and Dick Cheney.

Matalin and Carville are coming up on their 30th wedding anniversary, but that doesn’t mean that they started to agree on everything once they got together. No, they still disagree on most things. Sometimes, they disagree on stage in front of hundreds of people during election season. But they respect each other, and they are open to learning from the discussions that come out of their disagreements.

How to Present Your Political Beliefs and Handle Election Season in Your Dating Profile

It is very important to remember that your politics are part of who you are, but there is so much more to you that people would rather know about.

  • It is absolutely OK to select a political affiliation when asked by the dating site. You should never be afraid to hide who you are and what you believe with election season while online dating.
  • A great way to get your beliefs across is to talk about specific things you are personally involved with. For example, talk about a cause you give time to. This tells people where you stand through your actions, not just through your words.
  • Avoid listing a bunch of hashtags and causes with a disclaimer that tells people not to message you if they don’t agree with everything you just said.
  • Avoid making political exclamations. It can be very tempting to want to fly your flag as high as possible in your dating profile so you can scare off people from “the other side,” but it just makes you sound like the only thing you are going to want to discuss is politics. There are tons of singles out there who agree with your views but would like to talk about almost anything else in the world. Throwing “Don’t message me if you voted for Trump,” “MAGA 2024,” or “Make America Florida Again,” might be emotionally satisfying in the moment, but it will scare away a lot of the people you actually want to meet.
